Salsa Taliban

Fed up by the 'pre-tentious' crowds when you go out to the Salsa Clubs?...You know, those annoying people, those serious people in black that I have called Salsa Taliban. This is a page airing opinions, and advice. This is The War Against Taliban Salsa (TWATS). Join the resistance, read and spread the voice.

More Street Rhythms in Salsa: Sheffield Experience

Djs with a pulse on the street enrich Salsa nights - In sheffield

When it comes to some DJs with a sense of the street I have to salute DJ-Mark from Cubana, On Saturdays, and Chris Welsh - Forum on Tuesday with his side-kick Sponge Bob!

They were the first to include Reggaeton into their sets before it hit the big-time, and continue to push the envelope with "urban latino".

Rhythms, such as "Salsaton" (salsa with reggaeton), "Bachaton" (bachata with reggaeton) also feature quite regularly in their sets, although DJ Mark is giving Brazil's "Baile Funk" a.k.a "Funk Carioca" a regular run for its money on his saturday sets.

"Baile Funk" is another of those "grinding-style" street dances that requires a lot of giration...so, if it makes its presense felt, like reggaeton is doing, then...be prepared to see some attempt by the Salsa Taliban stiffs to sylize and regiment this dance style into a "salsified interpretation"....it will just look lame!

If you are easily shocked by grinding dance movements, then don't click on the video...

(couldn't see video? then watch the baile funk YouTube video here)

Another example of the Street Latin Style of Natural Dancing...

Salsa Stiff's attempt to stylize the street...

Doing Salsa to Reggaeton...what the FCUK?
It's funny to see those mourner's dressed in black, known as the Salsa Taliban, trying to dance Reggaeton like if it was Stylized Salsa. Things couldn't be further from the truth my friend.

Reggaeton like Latin Street Salsa (The Real McCoy) requires a lot of freedom in the hyp section, something which your stiff teachers unfortunately have not been able to impart...and it is not your teachers' faults it's inherited from the DNA of the ballroom & studio.

So, as a good Catholic that I am, I thought I would share some of my cultural knowledge from the American Continent - The South.

The street is a totally different animal from your middle class dance studio. Things are brutally in your face, raw, raunchy, and very, very rhythmic. So, if you are very easily shocked I recommend you do not click on the links or the Youtube Video.

Reggaeton...
El General was "The McDaddy" who was in the public eyes, and perceived to have directed Latin Musician's towards what was to evolve to be finally labeled commercially as Reggaeton. By tweaking, experimenting with Dance Hall Reggae and giving it that Latin Twist...thanks to all the rhythms that we can call on, such as plena, bomba, and the use of the Bachata guitar riff, to name but a few.

But as with things that become great, the main contenders are Panama Vs. Puerto Rico...although the Dominican Republic are trying to creep into the Reggaeton thing. See what you can Google, but in the meantime, check out the video below to see how you should shake your thing...

Dirty Dancing within Reggaeton is Known as "Perreo"
...It almost translates into "Dogging"...as you will appreciate from the video

If you can't see the video above...click on this YouTube link

So see how you have to move & twist, and perhaps if you oil up your hips, you may get a chance to do some proper Reggaeton...Perreo Style.

Bring the salsa rhythm back....see it in action

On a recent Saturday I went to Sheffield's little Cubana club where they play good Salsa with Skip on Fridays and some mixed rhythms from the America's on Sat with DJ Mark.

There to all those sensitive to rhythm was the Shock of the usual salsa Talibans (those who prefer to wear black and dance by numbers) inability to follow the music...

So, this my Buds, this one is for you...go back to basics and check out these Colombian kids in action...

Feetwork only...tricks & old style

Bringing rhythm to formalized "Salon" - in the room, stylized

Salsa Hacking & Hacking your salsa teacher

Hack Salsa & make your own steps for free!
If the teachers are doing so already and charging you for it, why don't you do it for free?

How to be a mother hacker - with salsa
1. Go to your favorite video sharing (YouTube is quite good)
2. ID candidates: shag; swing; lindy hop...and many others you fancy
3. "Salsify": you can see straight rip-offs (see teachers in action), others need a little analysis.

How to download YouTube Videos to PC -without any hustle...
Use the firefox browser and download the download helper extension for it...download helper.

Hot to play downloaded YouTube video on your PC -without any hustle...
Simply get & install a free player from a trusted source like ZdNet publishers. There is a nice FLV player, but you may need to register.

How can you tell your salsa teacher is a mother Hacker?
It's easy, he can't move to the beat, and he is doing exactly what you are doing now...except the joke is on him and you are running home with your Quarto$ (de ca$h).

As long as people believe the $al$a Taliban, people will continue to get milked...
To keep the $al$a revenue flowing the salsa industrial complex and their cohort teachers have to pull-moves and sequences out of somewhere besides their nether-regions?...so the steps will continue reproducing, just like bad-wind after a hot curry....So why not beat them at their own game and save yourself a bundle?
